
The Great Mosque of Al-Azhar (MAA) was founded by the Islamic Boarding School Foundation (YPI) on November 19, 1953 on a land owned by the Foundation covering an area of 43,755 m2 and was completed in 1958. In 1960 Prof. Dr. Mahmoud Syaltout (Chancellor of Al-Azhar University Egypt) during his visit to the Great Mosque of Kebayoran Baru Jakarta, gave a public lecture to the congregation of the mosque, and gave the name "Al-Azhar" to this mosque, which was previously better known as "Al-Azhar"The Great Mosque of Kebayoran Baru"
In 1962, in its work in fostering Islamic youth and women, MAA held a Front Group Scout activity and in the afternoon Al-Azhar Islamic Education (PIA). After the fall of the Old Order and the birth of the New Order, it brought fresh air for the da'wah of Islam, especially for Muslims. MAA began to establish formal educational institutions (1967), starting with the Al-Azhar Islamic Kindergarten and so on following the establishment of SDIA, SMPIA, SMAIA and finally establishing Al Azhar University Indonesia.
VISION OF THE GREAT MOSQUE OF AL AZHAR
In the articles of association of YPI Al-Azhar (article 4) it is outlined that there are two main objectives of establishing this Foundation, which cannot be separated from the establishment of MAA, namely: Fostering and developing Islamic da'wah and education in the broadest sense of the word. and pious in the context of Izzul Islam wal Muslimin. "From the main objectives of YPI Al-Azhar, we describe the vision of MAA as follows: Making the Al-Azhar Grand Mosque a center for developing people, da'wah and Islamic culture towards a friendly, knowledgeable, charitable and pious society for the glory of Islam and the Muslims."
MISSION OF THE GREAT MOSQUE OF AL AZHAR
Al-amru bi al-ma'ruf wa al-nahyu 'an al-munkar, namely encouraging goodness and preventing evil based on the Qur'an and Al-Sunnah Rasulullah SAW in a wiser way (Al-Hikmah), polite advice (Al-Mau'izhoh Hasanah), more civilized dialogue (Al-Jadal bi Al-Ahsan).
Al-Tathwir wa Al-Tatsqif, namely providing enlightenment and empowerment to Muslims through educational programs, training, recitations, sermons and scientific studies.
Al-Khidmah wa Al-Amnu, namely providing service and peace to Muslims in overcoming various problems of life and their lives, so that they can worship and carry out Islamic teachings in accordance with shari'ah guidance.
Al-Ri'ayah, namely improving the quality of maintenance and escort of the aqidah of Muslims from the dangers of apostasy, deviant sects, mindsets and lifestyles that are contrary to the values of the Qur'an and Al-Sunnah. The ideals of da'wah have been enshrined in QS 3: 110 " You are the best ummah that is shown to the midst of mankind, tasked with doing the commanding and forbidding the evil and believing in Allah SWT.." While the red thread of da'wah is stated in QS 3: 104 "And let there be among you an organized organization (ummah) that invites to good, to do good and forbid evil. And they are the ones who win.”
