  1. Since borrowing, has been subject to usury
  2. If you are late, you will be fined
  3. If you want to pay off faster, you will be penalized

Ibn Kathir wombahullah when explaining the following verse of usury,

"O you who believe, do not eat usury doubled and fear Allah so that you may gain success.." (Surat Ali Imran: 130)

Interpretation of the Qur'an Al-'Azhim, 2:419

Let the creditor (the party who has the bill on the other party) provide convenience to people who are difficult to pay off debts. The facilities provided may be given a delay until they have assets. Another convenience could be giving alms by paying off debt or aborting part of it. God ta'ala said,

"And if (the debtor) is in trouble, then give him respite until he is abundant. And giving charity (some or all of the debt) is better for you, if you knew." (Surat al-Baqarah: 280).

From one of the companions of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam–Abul Yasar-, he sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam said,

"Whoever wants to get the shade of Allah 'azza wa jalla, let him give a grace period for the person who is having difficulty paying off the debt or even freeing the debt earlier.." (HR. Ahmad, 3: 427. Shaykh Shu'aib Al-Arnauth said that this hadith authentic)

Ibn Kathir said, be patient with difficult people who find it difficult to pay off debts. (Interpretation of the Qur'an Al-'Azhim, 2: 287).

On the same page, Ibn Kathir also states that don't be like the Jahiliyah people, where when it is due it is stated to the debtor, "Pay it off. Otherwise, your debt will be expanded.”

If you are told to be patient, then you can't use usury. Riba in the past as exemplified by Ibn Kathir, when unable to pay off at maturity then there is usury.

In today's usury, since the beginning of the loan, interest has been charged (usury) and if it is late there is a fine.

How about you, are you still interested in borrowing money from usurious banks or moneylenders?

May Allah give taufik and guidance.
