The Lessons of the Story of Hajar, Ismail, and the Water of Zam Zam

Zam zam water is water taken from the zam zam well. It is located in the area of the Grand Mosque, precisely to the southeast of the Kaaba.

People who perform hajj or umrah usually bring zam zam water as a souvenir. Zam zam water is special water because it has an extraordinary story of its origin.

The story of zam zam water occurred when Prophet Ismail bin Ibrahim was still a baby.

At that time, Ismail's mother, Hajar, was in the desert with her baby. As far as the eye could see, there was no visible presence of water around them.

Ismail who was thirsty cried for a drink. However, Hajar's milk would not come out. Ismail kept crying because of thirst.

Unable to bear to see her child cry, Hajar ran to Safa hill to find water. When we got to the top, there was no water. Hajar then ran towards the hill of Marwah, hoping to find water there. However, the result is nil.

Ismail never stopped crying. He's still thirsty. Hajar kept looking for water in Safa-Marwah up to seven times. Ismail's mother then begged and prayed to Allah to give water to her son.

At that time Allah willed, Ismail's kick brought water from the ground. Seeing that, Hajar said, "Zam zam, zam zam," over and over. Zam zam means get together don't stop.

The story of the origin of zam zam water has a very deep ibrah or wisdom related to the sacrifices and efforts of mothers for their children.

In a hadith related to the importance of filial piety, from Abdullah bin Mas'ud ra, he said:

"I asked the Messenger of Allah, 'What is the most beloved deed to Allah?'. Rasulullah. replied, 'Prayer on time.' Abdullah bin Mas'ud ra asked again, 'Then what other charity?' The Messenger of Allah replied, 'Be filial to both parents.' Abdullah bin Mas'ud ra asked again, 'Then what kind of charity? The Messenger of Allah replied: 'Jihad in the way of Allah'." (HR. Bukhari)

Birrul walidain or filial piety to parents is located immediately after the five daily prayers to Allah سبحانه و تعالى. Even jihad fii sabilillah is number three after Birrul Walidain.

The results of hard work if successful may only be 30 percent of your hard work, 70 percent of your mother's cries and prayers in the third night and the sweat of your father who sincerely asks God.

The story of Sayyidati Hajar looking for water for Ismail. Who runs back and forth? beat it. Ismail was crying, shaking his hands and feet from the start, but the water didn't come out either.

When did the water come out? After Hajar iktiar back and forth Safa Marwah up to seven times, then put your trust and pray to Allah. That's when Allah brought water from Ismail's kick.

It could be the parents who make the effort, the children who get the results. That's why the name of the worship of jogging back and forth Safa Marwah hill is "sa'I". Sa'I comes from the Arabic sa'a-yas'a-sa'yan which means sincerity in trying.

If you are an adult, feel you are already established, achieve success, don't think that success is on your own efforts, remember your parents.

Allah سبحانه و تعالى. said in the Qur'an Surah Al Ahqaf verse 15:

"We have commanded humans to do good to their parents, their mothers conceived them with difficulty, and gave birth to them with difficulty (too). Conceiving her until weaning her is thirty months, so when she is an adult and reaches the age of forty years she prays: ' O my Lord, show me to be grateful for Your favors which You have bestowed on me and on my parents and that I may do righteous deeds that You are pleased with; do good to me by (giving goodness) to my children and grandchildren. Verily, I have repented to You and indeed I am of those who have surrendered '." (Qur'an 46:15)

Pray for parents as the prayer in the verse. If your parents ask for something, give it. So adults must be sensitive to what parents need.

Be happy if you still have two parents. Don't regret at the end.
