7 Art of Getting Happiness – Part 1

All humans agree that the purpose of life is to always seek happiness, even all creatures agree. But they differ in how to get it. There are those who justify all means for it, there are those who are still looking for where it is, and there are those who force their lust to be considered as happiness.

Before we look for something, we need to know where that thing is.

A. Where Is Happiness?

Some of us will answer in our hearts!.. but why do our hearts always go back and forth? sad now, happy later, then sad again? yes, as for the place to "feel" happiness is the heart, but where is the source of that happiness?

Happiness is in the sky, to be close to Allah.
Allah ta'ala says:

And whoever turns away from My warning, then indeed, he will live a narrow life, and We will collect him on the Day of Resurrection blind.

Being close to Allah is serenity and ease of heart. And the distance you create between Allah, is suffering and narrowness.

Who creates happiness? will He give it to those close to Him or those far from Him?

Heaven is a place where there is no sadness in it, where is the heaven where the most perfect happiness is located?

The Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wa salam said:

God bless you, God bless you all

If you ask Allah, then ask for paradise, because it is the middle and highest heaven, above it is Allah's arys, and from that heaven the rivers of heaven flow.. 2

The inhabitants of paradise paradise, are God's neighbors, where they are closest to God, so their happiness is the most perfect.

After the Prophet sallallaahu alaihi wasallam was hit by a barrage of tests in the 10th year after his prophethood, two people he loved died, namely his wife Khadijah and his uncle Abu Talib.

In those years, trials against Muslims for his preaching were going on. terror, torture and blasphemy seemed to come incessantly.

Allah ta'ala comforted him by mi'rajing Him in his 11th year. None other than because the location of happiness is close to Allah subhanahu wata'ala. 3

B. The 7 Secret Arts of Happiness

After knowing where the source of happiness lies, then there are several arts to get it:

1. Spiritual nutrition

All this time we are busy nourishing our bodies, do we know that the spirit also needs to be nourished?
The body was created from the earth (soil),

And indeed, We have created man from the essence (derived) from the ground.

While the spirit is blown into the body by God. Allah ta'ala says:

} 5

Then when I complete the incident and I blow My spirit (creation) upon him; then bow down and prostrate to him.

Spirit and body, both must have their own food. His food is from the source of His creation. Everything on earth is food for the body created from the earth (soil), and the nutrition of the spirit must come from the source of His creation, namely from the sky where Allah Almighty is.

How many of them have a thirsty soul, but they nourish their bodies instead?
When the heart (spirit) is narrow and discouraged, it goes to a restaurant or even to a place of immorality!

  • Which dominates? Spirit or body?

When our body is tired, then lying in bed, but our spirit doesn't leave, will the tiredness in our body go away?

Yes, when we sleep, our spirit also leaves. As the word of Allah subhanahu wata'ala:

Allah holds the life of (a person) at the time of his death and the life of (a person) who has not died when he sleeps; then He withholds the life of (the person) He has ordained death for and He releases another life up to the specified limit. Indeed, in that there are signs (greatness) of Allah for people who think.

Fatigue in our bodies will not go away, that means the spirit is dominating.

A child playing under the hot sun doesn't feel tired, but when his mother calls him to buy something at the market which is very close, his body suddenly feels tired. That means the spirit is dominating.

Bilal bin Rabah who was tortured by infidel Quraysh, in the middle of the hot ground under the hot sun of Mecca, while his body was crushed with a very large stone. Asked him "how do you withstand all that?" Bilal replied:

“مزجت حلاوة الإيمان بمرارة العذاب، فطغت حلاوة الإيمان على مرارة العذاب؛ فصبرت”.

I mingled the sweetness of faith with the bitterness of torment, then the sweetness of faith overcame the bitterness of the torment; I'm patient too.” 7

His spirit dominates his body.

We see in the last nights of Ramadan, lots of Muslims cry to praise Allah ta'ala, but the next day their faces are filled with happiness. On the other hand there are those who get drunk and laugh at sin, but the next day their hearts are full of narrowness, or what is commonly called grumpy.

Why did it happen? At night crying, the next day happy, and at night laughing, the next day crying. Because the soul is nourished.

  • What are the spiritual nutrients?

Spiritual nutrition is all that comes from Allah ta'ala, namely worship and syar'i knowledge

1. The Koran
Allah ta'ala says:

And thus We revealed to you (Muhammad) the spirit (Al-Qur`ān) by Our order.

2. Dhikr
Rasulullah shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said:

(( مثل الذي يذكر ربه، والذي لا يذكر ربه، مثل الحي والميت ))

The parable of a person who remembers his Lord and someone who does not remember his Lord is like a living person with a dead person. 9

3. Sharia knowledge
Ibnul Qayyim Rahimahullah said: Isn't a sick person if he doesn't eat, drink and take medication he will die? Likewise the heart, if it is not given knowledge and wisdom (the Qur'an) for three days, then it will die. 10

4. And all worship, Allah's law is nutrition for this heart
How many times do we give our body nutrition in a day? Likewise our spirit, give it more nutrition.

2. Rida

Ridha is willing to accept whatever Allah subhanahu wata'ala gives. From Abu Hurairah, the Prophet Muhammad shallallahu 'alaihi wa sallam said,

Rich is not measured by the many luxuries of the world. But rich (ghina') is a heart that always feels enough. 11

If a glass half filled with water were given to someone whose heart is pleased, he would be grateful and grateful. But if the glass is given to someone who is not pleased with him, surely he will be angry, feel humiliated because the water is only half, he will even blame anyone in front of him.

Ridha is the glasses we need to wear in our lives, everything that is heavy will be light, and everything that is narrow will be spacious with this Ridha.

Because we believe that God's destiny is the best for us, even though it tastes bitter we don't know that bitterness is medicine, if we don't drink it we will die.

When you walk, remember that there are people close to us who dream of being able to walk, while talking, breathing, running, these are all dreams of those who can't.

How precious are all the blessings, be pleased, be grateful, then you will be field.

If I ask, do you want me to buy one of your feet with 1 billion rupiah? Or 2 billion? your answer is predictable, now do you know how valuable all these blessings of God are?

It was narrated from Anas ibn Malik radhiyallahu 'anhu from the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wasallam saying: “Indeed, the magnitude of the reward is in accordance with the magnitude of the trial. And indeed, if Allah loves a people, surely Allah will give them trials. So whoever is pleased (with Allah's decree), Allah will be pleased with him. And whoever is not pleased, Allah will not be pleased with him“. 12

It is said that there was a fisherman who caught two fish every day, one for sale and one for himself and his family. Even though he only fished for a few minutes, when he caught two fish, he immediately went home.

Someone asked him, “Why did you only catch two fish? Why not more?”.

He replied: “so?

"Then you will have a lot of fish!". “Then?“. "Then you can sell!". “Then?“… “Then you will be rich!”…

The fisherman kept saying "so?“. Until his friend said: "then you will be happy!"
The fisherman said: "my brother! I'm now happy!“.

It's not that we don't have dreams, it's not that we limit God's sustenance, but whatever is pleasing, then happiness will come!

3. Forgive

Maybe you will say: you don't know what he did to me! Forgiving him is not that easy!

Brother, precisely because you are hurt, then don't want to lose twice. If you were wronged, it's already a loss, so don't lose the reward of forgiving!

As for the tyranny, it has all been stated by Allah and there must be a response, don't worry.

Maybe you will also say:I'm ashamed to apologize“.

Which comes first, temporary shame or God's incomparable paradise? by Allah heaven is far more expensive than shame.

Hatred is a long, chronic thorn in the chest, when you forgive, the thorn will be uprooted, so that the heart feels free again.

Even Abu Bakr Ash-Shiddiq Radhiallahu Anhu was once angry with Mistah bin Atsatsah, he was a relative of Abu Bakr Radhiallahu Anhu, a poor muhajirin who was always supported by Abu Bakr Radhiallahu Anhu.

However, Mistah was one of the spreaders of Aisyah Radhiyallahu Anha's adultery slander, so Abu Bakr was angry and promised not to support her anymore.

Allah ta'ala also rebuked Abu Bakr by sending down the verse:

{ وَلَا يَأۡتَلِ أُوْلُواْ ٱلۡفَضۡلِ مِنكُمۡ وَٱلسَّعَةِ أَن يُؤۡتُوٓاْ أُوْلِي ٱلۡقُرۡبَىٰ وَٱلۡمَسَٰكِينَ وَٱلۡمُهَٰجِرِينَ فِي سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِۖ وَلۡيَعۡفُواْ وَلۡيَصۡفَحُوٓاْۗ أَلَا تُحِبُّونَ أَن يَغۡفِرَ ٱللَّهُ لَكُمۡۚ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٌ }

And let not those among you who have advantages and spaciousness swear that they (will not) give (help) to relatives (their), the poor and those who emigrated in the way of Allah, and let them forgive and be generous chest. Don't you like that Allah forgives you? And Allah is Forgiving, Most Merciful. 13

Subhanallah, who among us does not want to be forgiven by Allah? if we are faced with Allah, with the sins that we have, what else can be expected besides Allah's forgiveness?.

Let's learn to forgive.
