Anti-Islam masquerading as anti-Arab

Recently, there have been individuals who spread anti-Arab ideas or as if the Arab culture that was brought to Indonesia is against Pancasila and the unity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia. After a deeper review, in fact their main goal is anti-Islam under the guise of anti-Arab.

There are several ways these people:

1. Spreading that Arab culture is incompatible with human rights, such as the hijab and veil culture.

For example, they accused the headscarf and veil of restraining women and depriving them of their human rights.

Answer: Hijab and veil never restrain the women, in fact they are happy and feel honored with the clothes according to the Shari'a.

2. Spread that Arab culture will threaten the culture of Indonesia and the archipelago.

Answer: Actually, Arab culture and Islamic teachings have long colored the culture of our archipelago and will not damage the diversity of Indonesia. If you want to be honest, Western culture and Korean culture have also entered Indonesia a lot, such as wearing tight jeans, hot pants, and others. However, they are not concerned about this, they are only concerned about Arab culture.

3. Popularize terms that corner and even vilify Arabs or those that smell Arabic.

For example:

"Kadrun (desert lizard)”;
“Go back to Arabia”;
"The hijab is Arab culture".

Answer: They popularized this nickname and showed that they were intolerant. When someone chooses to dress in Korean style and then popularizes it, they don't mind. Just try someone who says:

“Back there to China”
"This is Chinese culture, right?"

Of course this sentence is the phrase "racist" and no tolerance.

4. They generalize that such people have no tolerance and are racist towards minorities in Indonesia and are disloyal to the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia.

Answer: We find that many people of Arab descent supported and became figures of Indonesian independence along with Soekarno-Hatta in the early days of independence. If we study history, it is precisely those who support Indonesia's independence that many come from Arab countries.

We publish the text Ustadz Yulian Purnama:

Don't forget history

Countries that have colonized Indonesia:

1. Portuguese
2. Spain

3. Holland
4. France
5. Great Britain (UK)
6. Japan

The countries that first recognized Indonesia's independence were:

1. Egypt
2. Jordan
3. Lebanon
4. Syria
5. Iraq
6. Saudi Arabia
7. Yemen

All Arab countries. So why are so many Indonesians now anti-Arab? (Completed excerpt, source: Ustadz Yulian Purnama's FB status was written on August 17, 2020).

The above facts are not meant to spread hatred towards countries that once colonized Indonesia. Because now we live in peace and since time immemorial there have been many wars between countries. If we still hold grudges, there will be no end. However, we want to emphasize, there are individuals who are actually anti-Islamic, but masquerade as anti-Arabs.

We will discuss the following points that Islam is not totally anti-culture. And since time immemorial, Islam in Indonesia has never made noise and threatened the culture and integrity of the Unitary Republic of Indonesia.

This is a step taken by liberals and hypocrites (claiming to be Muslim, but actually not liking Islam and even wanting to destroy it). Hypocrites since time immemorial claim that they are doing good on earth, even though they are doing mischief. Likewise, the hypocrites in this era, they claim to be maintaining the integrity of the country and tolerance, but they are the ones who are not tolerant.

God ta'ala speak of the hypocrites,

"And when it is said to them, 'Do not do mischief on the earth!' They replied, 'Indeed, we are the repairers.' Remember, they are the ones who make mischief, but they are not aware. When it is said to them, 'Believe in you as others have believed!' They replied, 'Shall we believe as the fools have believed?' Remember, they are the fools, but they don't know." (Surat al-Baqarah [2]: 11-13)

The greater danger actually arises from the hypocrites because they are like "scissors in the folds" and stabbed from the inside.

Rasulullah Shallallahu 'alaihi wasallam said,

إِنَّ أَخْوَفَ مَا أَخَافُ عَلَى أُمَّتِي ، كُلُّ مُنَافِقٍ عَلِيمِ اللِّسَانِ

"Indeed, what I fear most about my Ummah is every hypocrite who is good at talking." (Sahih Al-Jami' no. 239)

Islam is not totally anti-culture, even if the local culture does not conflict with the Shari'a, we are ordered to adapt to culture and customs. For example, wearing batik clothes for men; or wearing a sarong and skullcap when going to the mosque for men.

There are even rules in Islam that actually make customs and culture the legal basis for certain cases,

العادة محكمة

"Customs (customs) can be used as a legal basis."

Shaykhul Islam Ibn Taymiyyah Rahimahullah explaining that adat would be the benchmark if shari'a and language did not explain the definition, he said,

"Therefore, the fiqh experts explain that the term (name) is of three kinds:

First, which is defined by the Shari'a; such as prayer and zakat.

Second, which is defined by the language; like the sun and the moon.

Third, which is defined by custom (culture) such as buying and selling words and benchmarks of doing good.” (Al-Iman, Thing. 224)

If there is a culture and custom that is good and does not conflict with Islam, we are ordered to do it so that it fits and is in accordance with the habits of the people.

Shaykh Muhammad bin Salih Al 'Utsaimin Rahimahullah said,

"It is sunnah to conform (adjust) to people's habits in matters that are not haram. Because breaking existing habits means becoming something that syuhrah (something that looks very different and striking, pent). Prophet Shallallahu 'alaihi wasallam forbid dressing syuhrah. So, something that goes against the customs of the local people, it's forbidden to do." (Syarul Mumti', 6: 109).

So, hopefully useful.
