What is Wahhabism?

First and foremost, we thank God subhaanahu wa ta'ala, who always bestows His grace and gifts on us, so that on this very happy occasion we can gather in order to add to our religious insight as a form of our 'ubudiyah activity to Him.

Then salawat and greetings to our Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam, who has struggled to fight for this religion that we love, for the sake of upholding the sentence of monotheism on the surface of this earth, as well as for his family and friends and those who faithfully hold on to his teachings until the next day.

Furthermore, we do not forget to thank the organizers who have given us the opportunity and entrusted us to speak in front of all the audience on this occasion, and have initiated the implementation of this tabliq akbar event with all our might and efforts, may Allah make their practice recorded. as good deeds on the Day of Resurrection, amen Rabbal 'alamin.

In this blessed opportunity, the committee has entrusted us to speak on the topic: What are Wahhabism?, may Allah give us His taufik and inayah in discussing this topic.

The very short question above requires quite a long answer, the answer will be summarized in the following points:

  • Circumstances that lie behind the emergence of accusations of Wahhabism.
  • To whom was the Wahhabi accusation directed?
  • The basic principles of da'wah labeled as Wahhabism.
  • Evidence of false accusations of Wahhabism against the preaching of Ahlussunnah Wal Jama'ah.
  • Summary and closing.

Circumstances Behind the Emergence of Wahhabi Accusations

Distinguished guests, by getting a glimpse of the state of the Arabian Peninsula and the surrounding countries, we will know the reasons for the emergence of these accusations, as well as we will understand what lies behind them. What we want to examine here is from the political and religious aspects in general, the aspect of aqidah in particular.

In terms of political aspects, the Arabian Peninsula was under fragmented power, especially in the Nejd area, power struggles always occurred all the time, so this had a very negative impact on economic progress and religious education.

Rulers live by collecting tribute from the common people, so they are very angry if there is power or preaching that can shake their power, as well as traditional and religious leaders who used to collect contributions from their followers, will lose objects if their followers understand regarding aqidah and religion correctly, from here they are very careful if someone tries to give understanding to the people about aqidah or true religion.

In terms of religious aspects, in the 12th century / 17th century, the religious situation of Muslims had deviated far from the purity of Islam itself, especially in the aspect of aqidah. There were many here and there practices of shirk or bid'ah.

The existing scholars do not mean they do not deny this, but their efforts are only limited to their environment and do not have a broad effect, or are lost in the currents which are so strong from opposing parties because their number is so large in addition to the strong influence of prominent figures. -public figures who support these shirk and bid'ah practices for the sake of perpetuating their influence or for seeking worldly interests behind it.

As we are still witnessing a situation like this among some Muslims, perhaps our country is still in this process, in which heretical sects are used as a springboard to gain political influence.

At that time Nejd, as the birthplace of the tauhid flag raiser, Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab, was very prominent. The chronicler and biographer Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab mentioned that at that time the influence of religion weakened within the bodies of the Muslims so that various forms of immorality, superstition, shirk, bid'ah, and so on spread.

Because religious knowledge is starting to be minimal among most Muslims, so that practices of shirk occur here and there such as asking saints' graves, or asking stones and trees by giving offerings, or trusting shamans, soothsayers and fortune tellers.

One of the areas in Nejd, called the village of Jubailiyah, there is a friend's grave there Zaid bin Khattab (Umar bin Khaththab's brother) who was martyred in the war against Musailamah Al Kadzab, people flocked there to ask for blessings, to ask for various needs, as well as in the village of 'Uyainah there is also a tree that is glorified, humans also seek blessings there , including women who have not yet found a life partner, ask to go there.

As for the Hijaz area (Mecca and Medina), the spread of knowledge is due to the existence of two holy cities which are always visited by scholars and students of knowledge. Here the habit of swearing by other than Allah is spread, walling and building domes over graves and praying there to get good or to ward off danger and so on (see this discussion in the book Raudhatul Afkar by Ibn Qhanim).

Likewise with the countries around the Hijaz, especially countries that are far from the two holy cities, coupled with the lack of scholars, of course, this will be even more concerning than what happened in the Arabian Peninsula.

This is called Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab in his book al-Qawa'id Arba':”In fact, the shirk in our time now exceeds the shirk of the people in the past, the shirk of the people in the past was only at happy times, but they were sincere when facing danger, while the shirk in our time is always at all times, both when it is safe and especially when they are in danger. The argument is the word of God:

فَإِذَا رَكِبُوا فِي الْفُلْكِ دَعَوُا اللَّهَ مُike

"So when they get on the ship, they pray to Allah with sincere religion to him, then when Allah saves them to land, they immediately return to shirk." (QS. al-Ankabut: 65)

In this verse, Allah explains that when they are under threat of disaster, namely drowning in the ocean, they pray only to Allah and forget their idols or worship, both from pious people, rocks and trees, but when they are safe, they return to land and commit shirk. . But nowadays people commit shirk at all times.

In circumstances like the above God opened the cause for the return of the Muslims to the true religion, clean from polytheism and bid'ah.

As mentioned by the Prophet in his words:

« إِنَّ اللهَ يَبْعَثُ لِهَذِهِ الأُمَّةِ عَلَى رَأْسِ كُلِّ مِائَةِ سَنَةٍ مَنْ يُجَدِّدُ لَهَاُ

“Verily Allah sends for this ummah at the end of every hundred years a person who renews for this ummah his religion.” (Narrated by Abu Daud no. 4291, Al Hakim no. 8592)

In the century (12 H / 17 M) a reformer was born in the land of Nejd, namely Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab From Bani Tamim tribe.

Who once received praise from the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam in his words: "That they (namely the Bani Tamim) are my people who are the strongest in opposing the Dajjal." (Narrated by Bukhari no. 2405, Muslim no. 2525)

Precisely in 1115 H in 'Uyainah in one of the settlements in the Riyadh area. He was born into a family of scholars, his grandfather and father were prominent scholars in the country of Nejd, not yet ten years old he had memorized the Qur'an, he started his journey of knowledge from his biological father and uncle, with capital intelligence and supported by a great spirit. Tall he traveled to various neighboring areas to study knowledge such as the Basrah and Hijaz areas, as was usually the custom of the old scholars where they provided themselves with mature knowledge before going down to the field of da'wah.

This is also mentioned by Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab in his book Ushul Tsalatsah:”Know that may Allah bless you, indeed it is obligatory for us to know four problems; The first is knowledge, namely knowing Allah, knowing his prophet, knowing the religion of Islam with evidence"

Then he mentioned the argument about the importance of knowledge before doing charity and preaching, he mentioned the words of Imam Bukhari: "The chapter of knowledge before speaking and doing charity, the argument is the word of Allah which reads:

فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّهُ لا إِلَهَ إِلا اللَّهُ وَاسْتَغْفِرْ لِذَنْبِكَ وَلِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ وَالْمُؤْمِنَاتِ وَاللَّهُ يَعْلَمُ مُتَقَلَّبَكُمْ وَمَثْوَاكُمْ

"Know that none has the right to be worshiped except Allah and ask forgiveness for your sins." So in this verse Allah begins with the order of knowledge before speaking and doing good deeds.

After he returned from his scientific adventures, he started preaching in the village of Huraimilak where his biological father was a Qadhi (judge). Apart from preaching, he continued to gain knowledge from his own father. After his father died in 1153, he was increasingly proselytizing monotheism.

It turned out that the conditions and situation in Huraimilak were not favorable for da'wah, then he moved to 'Uyainah, it turned out that the ruler of 'Uyainah at that time provided support and assistance for the da'wah he brought, but finally the ruler of 'Uyainah was under pressure from various parties, finally he moved again from 'Uyainah to Dir'iyah.

It turned out that the people of Dir'iyah had heard a lot about his preaching through his students, including some of his students from the ruling family of Dir'iyah. In the end, some of his students took the initiative to inform the Dir'yah leaders about his arrival.

So humbly Muhammad bin Saud as the leader of Dir'iyah at that time came to the place where Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab was staying, so a blessed agreement was made there that between the two of them promised to work together in upholding Allah's religion.

Upon hearing of this agreement, the enemies of Aqidah started to burn their heads, so they tried under various pretexts to overthrow Muhammad bin Saud's power, and tortured people who were pro-monotheistic preaching.

To Whom Was the Wahhabi Title Accused

Because day by day the da'wah of monotheism is spreading more and more, the enemies of the da'wah are no longer able to fight back with force, so they change direction by slandering and spreading false rumors in order to gain support from other parties to hinder the progress of the da'wah of monotheism.

Among the slander that is spread is designation wahabis for those who call to monotheism. As usual, every caller to the truth will surely face various challenges and thorns in pursuing the missionary journey.

As explained also by Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab in his book Kasyfus Syubuhaat: "Know you, that indeed among the wisdom of Allah subhaanahu wa ta'ala, not a single prophet was sent with this monotheism, except that Allah made enemies for him, as Allah says:

وَكَذَلِكَ جَعَلْنَا لِكُلِّ نَبِيٍّ عَدُوًّا شَيَاطِينَ الإنْسِ وَالْجِنِّ يُوحِي بَعْضُهُم

"Thus We made for every Prophet an enemy (namely) satan of the human and jinn kind, some of them whispered to the other parts of beautiful words as a trick." (QS. al-An-'am: 112)

If we read the history of the prophets, none of them did not face challenges from their people, even some of them were killed, including our Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam expelled from his homeland.

He was accused of being a madman, of being a sorcerer and a poet, as well as the role of the clergy who invited him to his teachings throughout the ages. Some were killed, imprisoned, tortured, and so on. Or accused of ridiculous accusations to corner them in front of people, so that people run away from the truth they are calling for.

This is also what Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab faced, as he expressed in the continuation of his letter to the people of Qashim: "Then it was no longer hidden from you, I heard that Sulaiman bin Suhaim's letter (an opponent of the da'wah of monotheism) had reached you, then some of you believe in the false accusations he wrote, which I myself have never uttered, never even crossed my mind, such as his accusation:

  • That I deny the books of the four schools of thought.
  • That I said that since six hundred years ago humans no longer have knowledge.
  • That I claim to be a mujtahid.
  • That I said that the difference of opinion between the scholars is disastrous.
  • That I make infidel those who are religious with pious people (who are still alive -ed).
  • That I once said; if I can I will tear down the dome that is over the grave of Rasulullah sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam.
  • That I once said, if I could afford it I would replace the Kaaba shower with a wooden shower.
  • That I forbid visiting graves.
  • That I make it infidels for people to swear by other than Allah.
  • My answer to these accusations is: actually this is all an outright lie. Then he closed with the words of Allah:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنْ جَاءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌ بِنَبَإٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوا أَنْ تُصِيبُوا قَوْمًا بِجَهَالَةٍ فَتُصْبِحُوا عَلَى مَا فَعَلْتُمْ نَادِمِينَ

"O you who believe, if a wicked person comes to you with a message, then research it, so that you do not reproach a people with stupidity." (QS. al-Hujuraat: 6) (read the answers to the various accusations above in the following books, 1. Mas'ud an-Nadawy, Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab Muslih Mazlum, 2. Abdul Aziz Abdul Lathif, Da'awy Munaawi-iin li Da'wah Muhammad bin Abdil Wahab, 3. Sholeh Fauzan, Min A'laam Al Mujaddidiin, and other books)

Principles of Da'wah Labeled as Wahhabism

The main point of the da'wah foundation that he upheld was the purification of the teachings of monotheism from various mixtures of shirk and heresy, especially in cultizing the saints, and their graves, this will be clear to people who read his books, as well as letters him (see collection of his personal letters in us Majmu' Muallafaat Sheikh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab, vol 3).

In a letter to the people of Qashim, he explained his creed clearly and clearly, the summary is as follows: "I testify to Allah and to the angels who are present beside me and to all of you:

  • I testify that I believe in accordance with the beliefs of the survivors, namely Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah, from believing in Allah and in His angels, His books, His messengers, to the day of resurrection after death, to good destiny and bad.
  • Included in believing in Allah is believing in His attributes contained in His book and the sunnah of His Messenger without tahriif (changing their understanding) and not ta'tiil (denying them). I believe that there is none like Him. And Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing. (From his expression, the false accusation that he is a person who likens Allah to creatures (Musabbihah or Mujassima))
  • I believe that the Qur'an is the word sent down, it is not a creature, it came from Allah and will return to Him.
  • I believe that Allah does whatever He wills, nothing happens except by His will, nothing comes out of His will.
  • I believe in everything that was reported by the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam about what will happen after death, I believe in the punishment and the pleasures of the grave, about the soul and body being reunited, then humans will be raised to face the Creator of all the worlds, in a state without sandals and clothes, and in a state of circumcision, the sun is very close with them, then human deeds will be weighed, and a record of their deeds will be given to each of them, some take it with their right hand and some with their left hand.
  • I believe in the lake of our Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam.
  • I believe in the shirat (bridge) that stretches over the hell of Hell, people pass through it according to their own practices.
  • I believe in the intercession of our Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam, that He was the first person to give intercession, people who deny intercession are including perpetrators of heresy and heresy. (From his statement, the false accusation that he was a person who denied the Prophet's intercession was refuted sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam)
  • I believe in heaven and hell, and both are here now, and neither will go away.
  • I believe that the believer will see Allah in heaven someday.
  • I believe that our Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam is the cover of all the prophets and apostles, a person's faith is invalid until he believes in his prophethood and his apostleship. (From his statement, the accusation of lying was denied that he was a person who claimed to be a prophet or did not glorify the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam. he even composed a book on the history of the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam by title Mukhtashar sirah Ar Rasul, isn't this a proof of his love for the Apostle sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam.)
  • I love the companions of the Apostle sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam, as well as his family, I praise them, and pray that Allah will be pleased with them, I shut my mouth from talking about the ugliness and strife that happened between them.
  • I acknowledge the karamah of the saints of Allah, but what is due to Allah may not be given to them, may not ask them for something other than Allah is unable to do. (From his statement, the false accusation that he was a person who denied karamah or did not respect the trustees) was refuted.
  • I do not disbelieve anyone from among the Muslims who commit sins, nor do I expel them from Islamic circles. (From his statement, it is refuted by the false accusation that he made the Muslims infidel, or understood the Kharij, see also Manhaj sheikh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab fi problem at takfiir, by Ahmad Ar Rudhaiman)
  • I am of the view that it is obligatory to obey Muslim leaders, both those who act justly and those who commit injustice, as long as they do not instruct them to commit immoral acts. (from his statement, it is refuted by the false accusation that he is a person who adheres to the ideology of khawarij (terrorist))
  • I am of the view that it is obligatory to stay away from heretics until he repents to Allah.
  • I believe that faith consists of words with the tongue, deeds with the limbs and confession with the heart, it increases with obedience and decreases with disobedience.

Evidence of Lies Accusations of Wahhabis Against Da'wah of Ahlussunnah Wal Jama'ah

By comparing the previous accusations with the aqidah of Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab that we mentioned above, of course we will know the lies of these accusations.

These false accusations were spread by enemies of the Ahluss sunnah da'wah to various Islamic countries, until today, many people are still deceived by these lies. even though his lies have been proven, even the entire composition of Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab has denied the accusation.

We take just a small example in his book “Usul Tsalatsah” a very small book, but full of pearls of knowledge, he begins by mentioning the words of Imam Syafi'i, then in the middle he mentions the words of Ibn Kathir who belongs to the Shafi'i school if he does not love the four priests of the madhhab or only adheres to the Hambali school , how could he mention their words.

I say to people who oppose me, in fact what is obligatory upon humans is to follow what was bequeathed by the Prophet sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam, then read the books that are with you, do not you take from my words in the slightest, but when you already know the words of the Apostle sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam what is in your book, then follow it, even if most people oppose it

In fact, in one of his letters to a tribal chief in the Sham area, he said: "I say to those who oppose me, what is obligatory for humans is to follow what was bequeathed by the Prophet. sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam, then read the books that are with you, do not you take from my words in the slightest, but when you already know the words of the Apostle sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam what is in your book, then follow it, even if most people oppose it.” (See the collection of his personal letters in the book Majmu' Muallafaat Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab, vol. 3).

In his expression above it is very clear that he does not invite people to his opinion, but invites them to follow the teachings of the Apostle sallallaahu 'alaihi wa sallam.

Scholars from various Islamic countries also denied these false accusations after they saw clearly the preaching that he was upholding, such as from the Yemen region Imam Asy Syaukani and Imam As Shan'any, from India Sheikh Mas'ud An-Nadawy, from Iraq Shaykh Muahmmad Shukri Al Alusy.

Shaykh Muhammad Syukri Al Alusy said after he mentioned the various false accusations that were spread by enemies against the da'wah of monotheism and its followers: “All these accusations are lies, slander and lies solely from their enemies, from heresy and heresy, in fact all their words and deeds and books refute them all.” (Al Alusy, New date, p.: 40)

Likewise Shaykh Mas'ud An-Nadawy from India said:

In fact, the most obvious lie that was accused of preaching Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdu Wahhab was that he was named Wahhabi, but greedy people tried to politicize the name as a religion outside of Islam, so the British and Turks and Egyptians united to make it a frightening symbol, which where every time there was an Islamic revival in various countries, then the Europeans saw that it would harm them, they then connected it with Wahhabism, even though the two were contradictory to each other.

Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab Mushlih Mazhluum, p.: 165

Likewise King Abdul Aziz in a speech he delivered in the city of Mecca in front of pilgrims on May 11, 1929 AD with the title "This is our Faith”:

They call us Wahhabi people, they call our school Wahhabi, assuming we are a special sect, this is a very heinous mistake, arising from false rumors spread by people who have a specific goal, and we are not followers of a madhhab. and the new aqidah, Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab did not bring anything new, our aqidah is the aqeedah of salafus sholeh, which is contained in the book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger, as well as what salafus pious adheres to. We glorify the four priests, we make no distinction between the priests; Malik, Shafi'i, Ahmad and Abu Hanifah, all of them are people who are respected in our view, even though in matters of fiqh we adhere to the Hambali school.

(Al Wajiz fi Sirah Malik Abdul Aziz, p: 216)

From this it is proven again the lies and propaganda made by the enemies of Islam and the enemies of Ahlussunnah da'wah that terrorists were created by Wahhabis. Because all the aqidah books that are held on campuses have never been spared from exposing the heresies of terrorists (Khawarij and Mu'tazilah).

Likewise accusations that they do not respect the saints of Allah or are considered to have created a fifth school. In fact, all the books studied at all levels of education are the books of the saints of Allah from various schools of thought. The speaker mentions here the books that serve as guides at the Islamic University of Medina.

  • For the Aqidah course: the book “Syarah Aqidah Thawiyah” by Ibn Abdil'iz Al Hanafi, “Fathul Majid” by Abdurrahman bin Hasan Al Hamaly. Plus, as a support “Al Ibanah” by Imam Abu Hasan Al Ash'ari, “Al Hujah” by Al Ashfahany Asy Syafi'i, “Asy Shari'ah” by Al Ajurry, Kitab “At Tawhid” by Ibn Khuzaimah, Book “At Tawhid” by Ibn Mandah, etc.
  • For Tafsir courses: Interpretation of Ibn Kathir Asy Shafi'iAsy Syaukany's interpretation. Plus as a support: Tafsir At ThobaryTafsir Al Qurtuby Al MalikyTafsir Al Baghawy As Syafi'i, and others.
  • For Hadith courses: Pole As Sittah along with the Sharia such as: “Fathul Bary” by Ibn Hajar Asy Shafi'i, “Saheeh Muslim Syarah” by Imam An Nawawy Asy Syafi'i, etc.
  • For fiqh courses: "Bidayatul Mujtahid" written by Ibn Rusy Al maliky, “Subulus Greetings” by Ash Shan'any. Plus as a support: “al Majmu'” by Imam An Nawawy Asy Syafi'i, book “Al Mughny” by Ibn Qudamah Al Hambali, etc. If you want to take a closer look at the books that serve as student guides in Saudi Arabia, please visit the library of the Islamic University of Medina or the Nabawi mosque library, there will be evidence of all lies and propaganda made by enemies of Islam and groups that are opposite to Ahlussunnah teachings. wal Jama'ah such as accusations of terrorists and wahhabis.

Furthermore, we invite all audiences, if they hear bad accusations about the preaching of Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab, or read a book that spreads these bad accusations, then he should research directly from the books of Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahab or the books of scholars who agree with him, so that he knows about the lies of these accusations, as Allah commands us:

يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا إِنْ جَاءَكُمْ فَاسِقٌ بِنَبَإٍ فَتَبَيَّنُوا أَنْ تُصِيبُوا قَوْمًا بِجَهَالَةٍ فَتُصْبِحُوا عَلَى مَا فَعَلْتُمْ نَادِمِينَ

"O you who believe, if a wicked person comes to you with news, then do research, so that you do not reproach a people with stupidity, so that you become regretful of what you did."

Because the books of Shaykh Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab can be obtained very easily especially during the Hajj season they are distributed free of charge, it will be proven that he does not invite new schools of thought or new beliefs that deviate from the understanding of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah, but he simply invites to do good deeds in accordance with the book of Allah and the sunnah of His Messenger, in accordance with the Ahlus Sunnah wal Jama'ah school of thought, to follow the example of the Prophet and his companions and the leading generation of this ummah, and to stay away from all forms of heresy and superstition.
