Bismillah,
If we learn from a very beautiful and subtle verse in explaining that we should abandon all bid'ah in religious matters. Allah ta'ala says:
لْ اللَّهَ اتَّبِعُونِي اللَّهُ لَكُمْ
"Say (O Muhammad to your people): If you really love Allah, then follow me (Muhammad), Allah will love you and forgive your sins.". (Surat al-Imron: 31).
This noble verse is a decisive decision maker for anyone who claims to love Allah but does not follow His prophet Muhammad truly, by obeying his commands and prohibitions, then he is a liar in his confession until he wanted to follow the Messenger of Allah in truth.
