Bismillah,
Tawasul means getting closer to Allah by obeying Him, worshiping Him, following the instructions of His Messenger, and practicing all the deeds that He loves and is pleased with. Or in other words someone performs a worship with the intention of getting the pleasure of Allah and His heaven.
However, some Muslims misunderstand tawasul. They rely on righteous people and saints who are dead. This is what they see as a form of self-approach to God. Though this can plunge them into the valley of shirk.
