Time Management in Islam

We pray and praise the presence of Allah Tabarāka wa Ta'ala, Shalawat and greetings may always be bestowed on our great Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, to his friends, family and followers who faithfully follow his guidance until the end.

On this occasion, in sha Allah we will learn how to optimize time.

How to optimize our time, so that at the same time we can achieve something more than other people.

There are several points in sha Allah, let's start with the first point.

DON'T LET OUR TIME EMPTY WITHOUT USEFUL ACTIVITIES

If it's just an activity, yes there is activity. Daydreaming is also an activity. But what we mean here is, if we have free time, we fill it with something useful, whatever it may be. Beneficial for our world or our hereafter.

Allāh Subhānahu wa Ta'āla in the Qur'an, Surah Al Insyirāh verse 7 motivates us. Says Allāh Subhānahu wa Ta'āla:

"If you have finished doing one job, then continue with another job.

Wow, does that mean Ustadz is annoyed?
Where do you rest, Ustadz?
Where is the refresh?

Some education experts say:

الرَّاحَةُ فِي تَبَادُلِ الَأعْمَلِ

"The rest of a Muslim is a change of job."

Sometimes we are not bored with our work?
How do you not get bored? Change jobs.

That's why Allāh Subhānahu wa Ta'āla said:

فَإِذَا فَرَغْتَ فَانْصَبْ

"When you're done with work, do another job.

And this connotation is not in worldly matters. And that doesn't mean that in religion we don't recognize rest.

Yes, it's just that resting in the context of our religion is not just sleeping, no.

There is entertainment in our religion, there is refreshing. But not refreshing that smells negative.

This is the word of Allāh Subhānahu wa Ta'āla in the Qur'an Surah Al Insyirah Verse 7.

In the hadith of Rasūlullāh shallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam it is the same. He sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam once said:

اغْتَنِمْ خَمْسًا قَبْلَ خَمْسٍ شَبَابَكَ قَبْلَ هَرَمِكَ وَصِحَّتَكَ قَبْلَ سَقَمِكَ وَغِنَاكَ قَبْلَ فَقْرِكَ وَفَرَاغَكَ قَبْلَ شُغُلِكَ وَحَيَاتَكَ قَبْلَ مَوْتِكَ

"Take advantage of 5 things before 5 things come, your youth before your old age, your health before your illness, your rich time before your poverty, your free time before your busy time, your life before your death."

(Hadith narrated by Al Hakim in Mustadraknya 4:341, authenticated by him and Shaykh Al Albani)

We will mention only those related to our study. The Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said:

وَفَرَاغَكَ قَبْلَ شُغُلِكَ

"Take advantage of your free time before your busy time comes."

So, the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam ordered us, so that the free time is immediately utilized before the busy time comes.

What for?

So that the empty things are not filled with something negative.

Why does Allāh Subhānahu wa Ta'āla in the Qur'an instruct us, when the work is finished, it is immediately followed by another work?

Why did the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam order us to take advantage of it before busy times come?

Because free time will usually bring things that are negative.

If you don't believe it, just look at unemployment, when the unemployment rate in a place goes up, usually the crime rate also goes up.

Confused, what do you want? Because there is no work.

When the brain is empty, then what appears is something negative. Hence the words of the poet:

 وَنَفْسُكَ إِنْ لَمْ تُشْغِلْهَا بِالحَقْ (بِالخْيْرِ) شَغَلَتْكَ بِالبَاطِلِ (بِالشَّرِّ)

"If we are not busy ourselves with good, then he will occupy us with evil."

So, if for example we don't use our time with goodness, then the devil will enter there and will provoke us to do bad things.

Why?

Zulaikhah teased Prophet Yusuf. Prophet Yusuf is handsome.

Any other reasons?

There is, namely opportunity.

Why did Zulaikhah think of tempting Prophet Yusuf? Even though Prophet Yusuf can be said to be just a child he found.

Why did Zulaikhah even think like that?

Because the soul is empty. Because his soul is empty and his soul is empty, it comes from empty activity.

So, if for example you have a child and the child is always doing negative things, keep him busy with positive things.

Because that kid has extra energy. So if the extra energy is not channeled into the positive, it will be channeled into the negative.

Fill our free time with something useful.

So, if for example at that time we are free, say resting, then don't let us just daydream.

What are you doing, Ustadz?
Cook work?

No, the name of the activity does not have to be physical activity. We activate our brains.

We try to think that our sins are many.

Does thinking about sin require the work of accomplices? I don't.

Just what do you need? Need meditation.

Yes. We need to think, imagine our sins. How much we have provided, so that we can optimize the rest time for something useful.

Or for example the time to rest before bed. How come you can't sleep?

Instead of playing Facebook that is not clear, texting here and there, what's better? Make a design.

What are my plans for tomorrow, what do I want to be in 10 years from now? It was designed that way while thinking, it doesn't have to be written down. The first time, the important thing is to imagine.
Let what? After a while, you will sleep, the dream is good, right, the dream is already an entrepreneur, for example, it's good to sleep.

Because of what? Because before we think something positive.

This is the first point, don't let free time without activity.

DON'T POST WORK OR PRACTICES

It's a disease. People usually like to pile up work. And it's not just in secular work.

For example, work in the office piled up, should be completed today. But, it's leyeh-leyeh bae, reading the newspaper, tomorrow bae ikih (just relax, read the newspaper first, do it tomorrow).

Usually, we do something to chase (close to) the deadline. If the deadline is tomorrow, just speeding now.

Just like students, right? The students are the same way, using credits, the overnight speed system. So, a year's lesson or a semester is rushed overnight.

Guaranteed tomorrow after the exam (completed) comes out, knowledge is lost, it's all over. Because if we want the knowledge we get to the maximum, enter the knowledge gradually.

That's why some scholars say:

منْ رَامَ علمة جُمْلَةً ذهبَ عنْهُ جملةً

"Whoever seeks wholesale knowledge, then the wholesale loss will also be lost."

So, if we study fast last night, it is guaranteed that it will disappear for a while, it will disappear quickly. It's a matter of science. It is the same in work, in practice it is like that.

Therefore I remind you, why does it feel hard to practice knowledge?

Because many of us when we get knowledge we don't immediately practice it, but we retreat. That's his fault. Finally it felt heavy, because it had piled up so much.

Try if we get knowledge, for example how to optimize time, we immediately put it into practice. Not starting tomorrow, I started practicing right away.

So, I have free time, immediately filled. Then, what kind of work do I have, if I have time right now and I still have energy, I will do it.

This is called practicing knowledge, so it feels light.

It is in a worldly job, such as seeking general knowledge.

In the case of ukhrowi, such as worship, we are ordered by the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam to practice, take advantage of free time and do not delay work. The Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said:

بَادِرُوا بِالْأَعْمَال فِتَنًا كَقِطَعِ اللَّيْلِ الْمُظْلِمِ يُصْبِحُ الرَّجُلُ مُؤْمِنًا وَيُمْسِي كَافِرًا أَوْ يُمْسِي مُؤْمِنًا وَيُصْبِحُ كَافِرًا يَبِيعُ دِينَهُ بِعَرَضٍ مِنَ الدُّنْيَا

"Hurry up to do good deeds, before the dark slander comes, a person is a believer in the morning, a disbeliever in the evening, a believer in the evening, a disbeliever in the morning, because he has exchanged his religion for the world."

(Hadith narrated by Muslim number 118)

That's an order from the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam.

So don't like to procrastinate. When you have time, do it. As soon as you have free time, do it. Whether it's worldly or ukhrawi, as long as it's beneficial, do it.

The Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said:

بَادِرُوا بِالْأَعْمَال

"Hurry up in charity."

Why, O Messenger?

"Before the pitch black slander comes."

What's the teacher like?
The Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam said:

يُصْبِحُ الرَّجُلُ مُؤْمِنًا وَيُمْسِي كَافِرًا

"(When the fitnah period has come), someone in the morning is still a believer, in the afternoon a disbeliever (apostate from this religion)."

Or vice versa :

"In the afternoon he is still Muslim, still has faith, in the morning he is an infidel (out of Islam)."

Slander, why?
The Prophet sallallāhu 'alayhi wa sallam said:

يَبِيعُ دِينَهُ بِعَرَضٍ مِنْ الدُّنْيَا

"Because he exchanged his religion for the world (material)."

So, when there is work, do it immediately.
Does that mean we are told to do a lot of practical work? Yes, as much as possible.

But not just a lot, pay attention to what? The quality.
So it's not just the quantity, sing akeh amalane. Pay attention to the quality too.

What kind of quality is Ustadz, for example?
The practice will be more effective when it is fitting to put the practice in accordance with the time and place.

There are some practices that if you do the practice at the appointed time, then it becomes a very good practice.

For example, when the time for prayer comes, the best thing to do at that time is prayer.

Already the call to prayer, "I'm ready to give alms (I want to give alms first)."

Well, this is not doing the practice according to the time set by our religion.

Another example for example, after praying, what is the most afdhal? Pray.

For example, if someone after praying immediately takes the Qur'an, reads the Qur'an, how about it? Less focus.

Even though reading the Qur'an is a big reward, isn't it? Big. But after praying, immediately. Which is more afdhal? Pray.

It performs the right practice according to the time. This is what will improve the quality of a servant's practice.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SPECIAL TIMES

Our time is limited, right? Limited.
Lots of work? Lots. There are also many practices.

How can we get around the limited time and we can get as much reward as possible?

Allāh Subhānahu wa Ta'āla gives privileges to some times.

There are times that have privileges that other times do not have. If we manage to take advantage of these times, then we will be able to reap the coffers of reward as much as possible.

Example:
Tonight is the night of Lailatul Qadr, isn't it the same?

Panjenengan (you) do good deeds tonight, the same as doing Lailatul Qadr night, which reward is greater? Great night of Lailatul Qadr.

Because:

"Lailatul Qadr is better than a thousand months." (Surat al-Qadr: 3)

If you do one night of Lailatul Qadr, the reward is greater than the reward for doing good for a thousand months. Yes, 80 years, yes, 83 years or 82 years, how many months have passed.

Imagine, 1 night the reward is like doing charity for 82 years. Have a special time.

So, if for example we meet with those special times, don't let that time pass you by. Because it is not necessarily that we will meet again at that time, not necessarily in our lifetime we will meet once.

So, when we have entered the last 10 days of the month of ramadan, we have to increase our night, so that we can take advantage of this special time.

Another example
Fasting Arāfah, is fasting Arāfah the same reward as fasting Monday and Thursday? Not.

This does not mean that fasting Monday and Thursday has no virtue. But the virtue of fasting Arāfah said the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam:

"(Fasting Arafah) I ask Allah, so that fasting can erase the sins of one year ago and one year to come." (Hadith Muslim history number 1162)

Isn't this lucky? This is so lucky.

So if, for example, it comes to the day of Arāfah, 9 Dzulhijah, try to take advantage of this special time to collect as many rewards as possible.

So, Allāh Subhānahu wa Ta'āla when giving these times is not empty without meaning, but we are motivated by Allāh Subhānahu wa Ta'āla.

There are extraordinary times, in a little time you can get extraordinary rewards.

DO DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES IN THE SAME TIME

Many of the people, their thoughts are still "nekuni ike, ike bae lah, ra sah sing lian-laine" (if you are working on one thing, then that's it, you don't need to do other activities).

In fact, there are several activities that can be done even though they are different at the same time, and the purpose is to deal with our limited time and our scholars used to be like that.

Here are some examples:

  • There is a scholar named Al Imam Khatib Al Baghdadi, he goes anywhere, goes anywhere, must bring a book. Walking is an activity or not? Activity.

If you (you) are walking, what are you doing? SMS? Facebook?

If Imam Al Khatib Al Baghdadi is walking he carries a book, while reading, reading books. Then after that he walked, read a book, and so on. So at one time he did so many activities.

Yes, now we have a lot of free time. When we are waiting in line at the hospital, we want to get an early number so we leave early, but the doctor presses the cloud (noon arrives), why try there?

Better to bring books, magazines, activities.

Unfortunately, it is not the Muslims who stand out in such matters, right now, you know. In the past, the Muslims were very prominent, but nowadays it is the non-Muslims who stand out.

It is said that in Japan, there is no one "tok knock" (dreaming), not there. For example, if people are waiting for something, he always has something to do. Either he brought a book, whether he brought a laptop or an Ipad. Write something useful.

If we wait while playing games, if they read, something useful.

  • There is a scholar named Abdul Wafa Ibn al Waqil. He's trying to figure out how to eat as fast as possible, meaning it doesn't take much time.

He compared eating dry bread to bread that had to be moistened. The difference, he said, was that he was able to read 50 verses of the Qur'an, the faster the dry ones.

That's why when he eats he always chooses dry bread. Because of the time difference between eating the dry bread and the delicious bread, what was mixed with it, it could be enough to read 50 verses.

If we?

He's really amazing. Until how to optimize the time he has.

Even this last story I will bring is even more amazing.

  • A cleric whose name is Abdul Barakat Majduddin when he goes to the bathroom, sorry, he is urinating. That means we can't do anything about it. Dhikr is not allowed, reading the Qur'an is not allowed.

If it was him, when he went to the bathroom, he called his brother, "Please read a book outside aloud." So that he doesn't do anything inside, doesn't do activities, doesn't do dhikr, doesn't read books, but people outside to read books aloud.

Before there was no radio, if now we have a radio, tell us to read it, so what?

So that his time is not wasted.

At one time he did two activities that were equally beneficial. Is waste of time beneficial or not? Oh, very useful, getting additional knowledge is also useful.

So this shows that different activities can be done at the same time.

What is the practice like, Ustadz?

==> For example, making a living.

When we are selling at the store, can we double it with other useful activities? What can you do ? Read, when there are no buyers.

Now, look at the people in the market, the sellers in the market, how many of the hundreds or thousands of traders in the market, who read the Qur'an in their spare time? If you find strange bin magic.

Why?

Because people think this is a trade. Trade is trade, why is it mixed up with reading the Qur'an?

Lol why sir? There's no contradiction. Is it contradictory to sell while reading the Qur'an?

==> Another example.

Friendship, worship or not? Worship.

Most of us fill our friendship just by chatting. It's okay to miss you. Mbok yes while staying in touch while doing other activities.

Yes, for example preaching, inviting him to goodness. So we get a double-double reward. At one time we get the reward of friendship at the same time we get the reward of preaching to the way of Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala.

Beneficial for Many People

Do activities that are useful for many people, so that our time is a blessing. The blessing of time is not given to everyone by Allah. So that our time is blessed, one way is to do things that can be useful for many people, such as studying religion.

By studying religion, we will gain knowledge. After we get knowledge we can spread it to others. When we share it with others, other people will benefit from what we learn, so that we can provide benefits for others. And that's the kindest person.

Said the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam:

خيرُ الناسِ أنفعُهم للناسِ

"The best of humans are those who are most beneficial to humans." (HR Ahmad, Ath Thabrani, Ad Daruqutni. This hadith was quoted by Al Albani in Sahihul Jami' number 3289).

The person who is useful is the best person.

Most people think about his personal matters only. So the time is not blessed because all he thinks about is himself. If you want our time to be blessed, set aside some of our time for something useful for this ummah. When we have time, think about it. Oh study, studying religion is more effective than praying sunnah.

Imam Shafi'i said:

طلب العلم أفضل من صلاة النافلة

"Seeking religious knowledge is more afdhal than sunnah prayers."

Why? Because the sunnah prayer is for oneself, while knowledge is for the people.

The Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam said:

وَإِنَّ فَضْلَ الْعَالِمِ على الْعَابِدِ كَفَضْلِ الْقَمَرِ لَيْلَةَ الْبَدْرِ على سَائِرِ الْكَوَاكِبِ

"Indeed, the privilege of the scholar compared to the worshiper is like the privilege of the full moon compared to the stars." (Hadith narrated by Abu Dawud number 3641)

The scholars are likened to the full moon, while the worshipers are likened to the stars. Because the full moon light penetrates to the earth, while the stars only illuminate the surroundings.

So, we have to pay attention to what benefits we can do for other people. As long as there is something useful, we do it for others, of course without compromising our self-interest.

Not always through knowledge, can also with energy.

For example, someone builds a mosque, then we can donate energy, donate money. So that each of us's time will be blessed because we always fill our time with something that is useful for many people.

Have a Priority Scale

Among the many jobs, of course there are important, very important, important and unimportant.

  1. Between the obligatory and the sunnah, what must take precedence is the obligatory because of priority.
  2. Between fardhu 'ain and fard kifayah, fardhu ain takes precedence. For example, da'wah to the family is fardhu 'ain, while da'wah to others is fardhu kifayah.

So we must also have a priority scale so that our time is optimal. It is even better if fardhu 'ain is accompanied by fard kifayah, this is even better.

Another example:
In world matters. When it's time to pay off debt, paying off debt is more important than using capital so that the business is bigger. Because the law to pay off debts is religiously obligatory. In business, if so, then others will have more confidence.

Make a priority scale so that our time can be optimal.

Plans, Goals & Concrete Steps

Something useful we make a target, then make concrete steps to get to that goal. If people have targets then the work will be neat. And it's not just a worldly job, including in seeking knowledge also apply it like that. Then the steps are there, so the steps are orderly.

Great success is the accumulation of small successes. Because Allāh Subhānahu wa Ta'āla values the process, not just the result.

Mentioned by the Prophet sallallaahu 'alayhi wa sallam, there are among the prophets whose followers only two or one. There were even some of the prophets who had no followers. Did their preaching fail? Not. Allāh Subhānahu wa Ta'āla appreciates their process of preaching, even though the results are not as desired.

Our highest goal is to enter heaven. Concrete steps are istiqomah in worship. Those are the people who in sha Allah can optimize their time.
