The sifir sign is an additional sign in the verses of the Qur'an. There are two types of sifir signs, namely: Sifir Mustadir and Sifir Mustatil.
1. Sifir Mustadir
According to the language, Sifir means circle, while Mustadir means circulate/turn/round. In other words Sifir Mustadir is a perfect circle sign.
The definition of sifir mustadir in the Qur'an is an additional sign in the form of a small circle above the letter, to indicate that the letter should not be read long, either when the reading stops or is continued.
Examples of verses that contain Mustadir's sifir are:
Surah Hud verse 68 (11:68): اِنَّ ثَمُوْدَا۠ كَفَرُوْا Tsumuuda, the letter da is read short even though there is an alif.
Surah Al Kahf verse 14 (18:14): لَنْ نَّدْعُوَا۟ مِنْ دُوْنِهٖٓ Lan nad'uwa, the letter wa is read short even though there is an alif.
Surah Ar Rum verse 39 (30:39): مِّنْ رِّبًا لِّيَرْبُوَا۠ فِيْٓ اَمْوَالِ Buwa screen robbery, the letter wa is read short even though there is an alif.
Surah Al Insan verse 4 (76:4) : سَلٰسِلَا۟ وَاَغْلٰلًا Salaasila, the letter la is read short even though there is an alif.
2. Sifir Impossible
According to the language, Sifir means circle, while Mustathil means oval.
The definition of sifir mustathil in the Qur'an is a sign in the shape of an oblong (oval) above a letter to indicate that the letter is read long when the reading stops but is not read long when the reading is continued.
An example of a verse that has an impossible sifir sign is:
Surah Ali Imran verse 81 (3:81): وَاَنَا۠ مَعَكُمْ Wa ana, the letter na is read short even though there is an alif.
Surah Al Kahf verse 38 (18:38): لٰكِنَّا۠ هُوَ اللّٰهُ Laakinna Huwallohu, the letter na is read short even though there is an alif.
Surah Ah Ahzab verse 10 (33:10): بِاللّٰهِ الظُّنُوْنَا۠ Billahizzununaa, the letter na is read as long as naa because the reading ends / stops.
Surah Ah Ahzab verse 67 (33:67): فَاَضَلُّوْنَا السَّبِيْلَا۠ Faadhluunassabiilaa, the letter la is read long to be laa because the reading ends / stops.
