Incorrect Specialization At The End Of The Year

Among the customs of people in entering the New Year in various parts of the world is to celebrate it. Even making new acts of worship such as praying in congregation to welcome the new year.

What are the usual acts of obedience specialization even classified as bid'ah misleading in welcoming the new year? let's discuss below.

1. Forgive and Shake Hands

A Muslim is required to always repent to Allah for his sins, is also required to return rights to their owners, and apologize, so that when he is resurrected on the Day of Judgment he does not have any enemies who sue him for his injustice, so whenever a Muslim commits a mistake against his brother should he apologize immediately, and there is no need to wait until the end or the beginning of the year.

As he said ﷺ: Whoever commits injustice to his brother immediately apologizes because later on the Day of Judgment it will not be dinars or dirhams that will be taken, but good deeds, and if he does not have good deeds, then the sins of his brother will be dumped on him. 1

Therefore setting aside the end of the year to apologize is a matter that is different from the Prophet ﷺ and is an act of Bid'ah.

2. Specializing in Humans to Repent at the End of the Year

Some people call to repent and celebrate at the beginning or end of the year, either through social media messages or other means. Repentance and repentance are undeniably superior, but the problem is specifying a certain time.

Even though repentance and istighfar are prescribed every time, especially after committing a sin. Does it make sense, someone who committed a sin in the middle of last year deliberately ends his repentance until the end of the year, who guarantees that there is still age to repent?

It is permissible to preach or lecture with the motivation of repentance, muhasabah and so on. Due to the condition of some Muslims who disagree with Islamic law at the end of the year, but it is necessary to remember "without specialization".

If you pay attention to the verses and hadiths related to repentance, you will find calls for immediate repentance and return to Allah at any time without being bound by a certain time, especially after committing sins and mistakes. Allah ta'ala says:

Indeed, repentance with Allah is only repentance for those who do evil because of ignorance, and then they repent immediately, then it is they who are accepted by Allah for their repentance; and Allah is All-Knowing, All-Wise. 2

3. Muhasabah throughout the year, and not just at the end of the year

As Repentance is not bound by a certain time, as Imam Ibn Rajab said wombahullah :” It is a lifetime obligation "Then muhasabah is more important to do at any time, and humans are constantly required to do it, Allah taala  said:

نَفۡسٞ مَّا قَدَّمَتۡ لِغَدٖۖﵞ

Let everyone pay attention to what he has done for tomorrow (hereafter).

Imam Ibn Kathir in his commentary says: "Give account of yourself in this world before you are held accountable in the hereafter, and see what provisions you have prepared for the day when your deeds are shown before the Lord, and know that HE is the One who knows all your deeds and circumstances. And nothing is hidden from Him" 3

Said Umar bin Khattab Radiyallahuanahu : Give yourself an account before being judged in the hereafter, and weigh your deeds before they are weighed in the hereafter, because that is lighter. 4. Ahmad's history (az zuhd 177), at tirmidhi in his sunan (2458), ibnul jauzi (shifatushofwah 268/1).

4. The Charity Notebook is Not Closed at the End of the Year

A. The mistaken belief relates to closing the notebooks at the end of the year

It was found that some people had wrong beliefs, they believed that the charity notebook was closed at the end of every year and everything related to religion, especially matters of belief or faith, required evidence, and there was no evidence for this.

The truth is that my deeds are closed at the end of his life, as the Prophet ﷺ said: Verily, one of you really works with the deeds of the inhabitants of heaven until the distance between him and heaven is only an inch, then destiny precedes him, then he works with the deeds of the inhabitants of hell and then he enters it. And in fact, one of you really works with the deeds of the inhabitants of hell until the distance between him and hell is only an inch, then fate precedes him, then he works with the deeds of the people of heaven, so he enters it. (Bukhori Muslim).

B. The closing of a servant's charity record at the end of his life, not at the end of the year

Among the cases of Bid'ah, messages are spread in society to increase rewards and charity at the end of the year, because at that time the charity notebook is closed, even though the evidence shows that charity records are closed at the end of life, including:

  1. Said Imam Ibnu Jarir when interpreting ﵟوَإِذَا ٱلصُّحُفُ نُشِرَتۡﵞ : And the day when the record of my deeds is shown its goodness and ugliness after previously being folded . 5
  2. Ibn Kathir quotes from Qatadah wombahullah : Your notebook, O son of Adam, will be written down, then folded, then opened again on the Day of Resurrection, so everyone should pay attention to what is recorded in their notebook. 6
  3. Said Ibn Juraij wombahullah : If the son of Adam dies, the record of his deeds is folded, then it will be laid out again on the Day of Resurrection to be reckoned with. 7
