Al Akbar Mosque

Surabaya's Al Akbar Mosque (MAS) is one of the portraits of the mosque's figure who is a pillar of social activity. The mosque is the largest mosque in Indonesia, which accompanies and complements the mosque that was previously owned by Indonesia, the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta. Al Akbar Mosque stands on an area of 11.2 hectares and began construction on August 4, 1995-marked the groundbreaking by vice president Try Sutrisno. On November 20, 2000, the mosque was inaugurated by President KH Abdurrahman Wahid and is able to accommodate 30,000 worshipers.

On November 20, 2000, the mosque was inaugurated by President KH Abdurrahman Wahid and is able to accommodate 30,000 worshipers. The election of November 10 as the day of the inauguration because it is the identity of the anniversary of the City of Surabaya as well as Heroes' Day. In addition, the timing of the inauguration coincided with the anniversary of the Sepuluh Nopember Institute of Technology (ITS) Surabaya. The team from ITS designed the mosque building.

The distinctive part of the mosque is the roof which consists of a large dome supported by four small pyramid-shaped domes. These five domes signify the number five which is identical to the pillars of Islam. In addition to the dome, the mosque is also equipped with a 99-meter-high minaret. This number represents the 99 names of Allah SWT (Asmaul Husna). Initially the mosque will be equipped with seven minarets. However, due to the economic crisis in 1997, only one tower is now standing firmly in the northern corner of MAS.
