Bandung Islamic University (Unisba), which started as a Higher Islamic College (PIT) is domiciled at Jalan Abdul Muis (now Jalan Pungkur) No. 73 Bandung, starting to occupy the campus at Jalan Tamansari No. 1 Bandung since 1972 which was built on an area of 10,808 m2 provided by the Bandung Municipal Government.

At the beginning of its development, the Unisba campus did not yet have a special place for praying in the form of a mosque, especially for Friday prayers. The mosque's activities began in early 1973, spearheaded by several students. Even though at that time it did not have a mosque building, and sometimes moved from place to place looking for an empty room. However, the mosque's activities continued to increase which was further enhanced by the holding of Eid al-Filtri and Eid al-Adha prayers. Also other activities in the context of Commemoration of Islamic Holidays (PHBI). These activities were one of the activities held by the students at that time.

It was only around mid-1976 that a philanthropist from Surabaya, Mr. H. Asy`ari, gave assistance to build a mosque in Unisba with an area of ± 300 m2. In appreciation of his services, the founders of Unisba immortalized his name into the name of the Unisba mosque, namely the Al-Asy`ari Mosque, Bandung Islamic University. In line with the change in university leadership and the increasing number of students, at the end of 1987 the Unisba campus at Jalan Tamansari No. 1 carried out a thorough restoration, including the mosque. Currently the new mosque stands majestically occupying the second floor (above the hall) which can accommodate ± 1500 worshipers, with the permanent name Masjid Al-Asy`ari, Bandung Islamic University.

Since then, the Al-Asy`ari mosque has started to take part in introducing itself outside the campus through various activities. With the increase in its activities, this mosque is increasingly recognized among the wider community. It is also known by the campus community.
